What are cookies?
Cookies are small files that the website visited by the user sends to its terminal (usually the web browser), where they are stored ready to be retransmitted to the same website on the user's next visit. When navigating a website, users may also receive cookies on their terminal sent by other websites or web servers (so-called "third party" cookies)on which certain elements can reside, for example, images, maps, sounds, specific links to websites of other domains) that are on the site being visited.
Finality and purposes of cookies
Numerous cookies, usually found on the user's browser, can remain there quite for a long time and also be used for different purposes: authentication, sessions monitoring, spesific configuration information starage regarding the user's accessing the server. Furthemore, some technically necessary operations can be carried out only with the cookies use's help. For instance, some accesses to reserved areas of a site and current account online activities would be much more complex and less safe without the presence of cookies, as they make it possible to identify the user and to maintain this identification the same throughout the session.
Types of cookies
Technical cookies: these are used exclusively for the purpose of "transmitting communication to an electronic communication network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provision of a service of the information company explicitly requested by the contracting party or the user in order to provide the said service" (art. 122, paragraph I of the Personal Data Protection Code). These can be divided into browsing or session cookies which guarantee normal navigation and use of the website (making it possible for example, to make purchases or be authenticated in order to access reserved areas).
Analytics cookies, assimilated by the technical cookies to persue only statistical purposes. They are used directly by the manager of the website to collect information, in an associated form (anonymous), about the number of users and the manner in which they visit the website.Functional cookies, that allow the user to navigate in relation to a series of selected criteria (for example, the language or the products selected for purchase) to improve the service provided.
Profiling cookies: these are used to create profiles of the users and are employed for sending advertising messages according to the preferences revealed during their online navigation.
Third party cookies: in the course of browsing the website, the user may happen to receive cookies from different websites or web servers on his or her computer, which are set directly by the website or web server managers concerned and are separate from this site. These cookies can be sent to the user's browser by the third party companies that can be accessed through this site, and are sent directly from their respective websites. In such cases, operator of this website is not connected to the operation of such cookies which are the responsibility of the above-mentioned third parties.
